Greetings Cappy Families,

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

Apologies for the delay of our weekly message; Ms. Khulbe and I were working as volunteers this weekend at PURE Casino, alongside our Super Cappy Volunteer Coordinator, Belinda, and many other staff, council and community members. I was so grateful to the families who came out to help (and to those who sourced out friends & family to come and support). The weekend was hard work and it was an neat chance to get to know more great people from our community. These were not short shifts, so we had lots of time to talk. Many of our volunteers worked 10 hour shifts (and several worked two shifts) – our volunteers wanted to ensure that there will be ongoing funding for student experiences. I appreciate you so, so much!

So again many thanks to

  • Belinda
  • Kandy and her sister
  • Anna
  • Hazelle
  • Nicole
  • Troy
  • Angela
  • Ms. G, for having Paula come out
  • The Allens, for having the Stunzi's come out
  • The Mahons, Jason & Wanda
  • The Kellys, Lori & Darryl
  • Ms. Malcolm, for having your mom support us
  • Ms. Norrie, for gathering family support
  • Ms. MacDonald and the MacDonald pack: Gavin, Dawson, James and Aleeya

request |  "Pocket Change" for Poppies

The Poppy is a powerful symbol of Remembrance. Every year the Canadian brings poppies for our students to wear at the Remembrance Day assembly to honour and remember our fallen soldiers.  We ask students to bring "pocket change" in any amount to donate to our veterans in exchange for a poppy. If students do not have pocket change they will be given a poppy to wear on Thursday, when all poppies are handed out. Pocket change is a term for loose/extra coins that you may have in your pocket to donate to the legion.

information | about the Poppy and Remembrance Day

From the last Friday in October to Remembrance Day, millions of Canadians wear a Poppy as a visual pledge to never forget those who served and sacrificed. The red flower also is the symbol of the Legion's Poppy Campaign, raising funds to support Veterans and their families in need. We invite everyone across the country to show their recognition by proudly wearing this symbol of Remembrance.

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

"In Flanders Fields" is a poem written during the First World War by Canadian Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae after he presided
over the funeral of a friend and fellow soldier. So many years later, his poem continues to poignantly express the tragedy of the losses of war, and the importance of carrying on their memories.

In Flanders Fields

by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae

May 3, 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
